It is one of the best Big Bands of today, owner of a repertoire that covers the history of jazz with extraordinary mastery and an ambassador of African-American culture. It is made up of fifteen of the most respected soloists and jazz musicians. Conducted by Wynton Marsalis, this famed and versatile orchestra is capable of performing a repertoire ranging from the masterpieces of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus and many others. to works composed by the members of the group and commissioned works. Since 1988 this group has been the resident orchestra of the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, the most important cultural complex in the United States.
